The North West Stroke Research Network has put together a dictionary of terms for people who are involved in stroke research. The 35 page glossary can be downloaded as a PDF from here (620KB).

The National Stroke Research Network has a Patient Public and Carer Involvement (PCPI) strategy. Its aims are:
1. To make sure the views of stroke patients, carers and the public are embedded at all levels of the research network and in all parts of the research process
2. To make sure people doing research (researchers) inform and involve stroke patients, carers and the public and help them to do this.
3. To make sure that there are ways that stroke patients, carers and the public are told about and can get involved in stroke research

The NHS has published lots of documents to stress how important it is to involve patients and to show how much benefit it has.

The Stroke Research Network has a national patient, carer and public involvement person (Zena Jones) who is making sure that the three aims are carried out nationally. More information on PCPI in the SRN can be found here. Here in the North West we are trying to make sure that this happens locally too.

What is happening in the North West?

  • We have four stroke survivors and carers members sitting on our Steering Group. This helps us to include their perspective in the work we do.
  • We have set up groups in different areas of the North West to comment on research and what we are doing. We held a training day on 21st October in Manchester for members of the groups and anyone interested in joining them. The groups will be meeting again in April 2009. If you are interested in coming to one of the meetings, please contact Pamela Haslam: 0161 2018, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
  • We would like to have a database of people who might be happy to comment on research occasionally. If you would like more details, please contact Pamela Haslam: 0161 2018, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

We also have a newsletter which comes out every three months which we can send to you. Let us know if you would like a copy by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
